Vegetable penne combo:

This is a moderately high-starch recipe, not for the wheat-intolerant dog.The inclusion of pasta or another starch is only recommended for high-energy dogs who can burn off the empty calories. It is most definitely not for a dog that needs to lose weight. If a dog has cancer, starch is best avoided altogether.
* Vegetables and herbs of the season (both root and leaf), such as celery, parsley, coriander, basil, watercress, and garlic, diced
* Potato peelings (optional)
* Vegetable or potato water (unsalted)
* Whole-grain penne pasta
* Olive oil (or sunflower-oil margarine)
Place the diced vegetables and potato peelings (if available) in a large saucepan and cover with any previously saved vegetable or potato water. Boil until it just starts to become tender.
Add the pasta and continue to boil until it is soft (that is, beyond al dente), ensuring there is sufficient water to prevent the pan from running dry. Drain the liquid and stir in the oil or margarine to prevent clogging.
When the dish has cooled, give it to your dog.This will last several days in the refrigerator. It can be served as a meal in itself; because of the starch element, it is best fed separately from a meat meal.

Tasty and nutritious dumplings:

The raw dumplings can also be added to a stew or casserole for the last 10 minutes of its cooking time.
* Gram (chickpea) flour
* Shredded beef or lamb suet (using vegetarian suet will make a vegetarian version of this dish)
* Minced herbs of your choice (parsley is excellent), dried or fresh, according to season
* Turmeric powder (if your dog is a real curry lover, a little cumin, coriander, and cardamom powder can be added for extra flavor)
Mix together the gram flour and suet (experiment with the proportions to get the texture you desire), then add the herbs and turmeric.
Mix in just enough water to make a workable dough. Form into separate balls of whatever size you wish (smaller ones will cook more quickly).
Boil for about 10 minutes.
When the dish has cooled, give it to your dog.

Organic liver cake:

For use as a training aid or as treats. Adapted from a recipe kindly submitted by a client of the author.
* 1 lb. organic liver (lamb or calf liver)
* 1 whole organic garlic bulb
* 1 teaspoon fresh or dried herbs (parsley, oregano, sage, thyme), finely chopped
* 1 cup organic oatmeal
Put all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until thoroughly mixed.The mixture should be thick and heavy, and not too wet. If it is too wet, add some more oats.
Spread into a greased baking pan, to about Va inch in thickness, and bake in a 325°F oven for about 15-20 minutes until it is just crusty on the top, but pliable enough to divide easily into pieces.
Once cooled, cut or break into pieces about 2 inches square.These can be frozen and one can be defrosted each day to give as a treat, or to take in your pocket on your walk or training session.

Cheesy morsels:

This can also be made with crushed cranberries or blueberries in place of the herbs, for a special health-giving treat.
* Cottage cheese or soft goat's cheese
* Gram (chickpea) flour
* Sesame flour
* Herbs (such as chives, rosemary, garlic, and parsley), finely chopped or grated
Mix all the ingredients together thoroughly and break into bite-size pieces.
Cook lightly in a 325°F oven for about 10-15 minutes until they retain their form.
When the morsels have cooled, give some to your dog.
